A thread on Liverpool previous transfer and how I feel it hinders and wasted our effort/push to be an even greater team

Transfer is important. But smart transfer is more important. Rather than just spending heavily on 3,4 players. When just a single key signing can help the team
Prior to 2000. United won 6 Premier League and adds two 2nd place finish. Liverpool floats around 8th to 3rd during those years.

In 3 years before 2000, they added Stam, Barthez, Yorke. Who all become pillars of the team for their 2000s dominance

Spending and (League Position)
2000/2001

Liverpool : 12.5 (3)
Man Utd : 8 (1)

We outspend them but with no particular key players/signing. A common trend sadly. United didn't really need to buy anyone. No significant player out too.
2001/2002

Liverpool : 29.85 (2)
Man Utd : 57.6 (3)

Riise and Dudek were necessary buy. Kirkland was a good backup and Baros was a squad player.

Squad refreshment. Blanc and Nistelrooy was great replacement signing for Stam and Cole. Veron didn't quite reach the height.
2002/2003

Liverpool : 8.7 (5)
Man Utd : 31.5 (1)

Previous investment work well for United. They added smartly with key signings, Ferdinand.

Another scattergun approach in transfer from Liverpool. Leads to nothing really. Different in riches told too.
2003/2004

Liverpool : 22.5 (4)
Man Utd : 53.19 (3)

Liverpool added 3 solid dependable players. Again choosing depth rather than key players.

2 years of players leaving means United buys heavily. Starting fresh their new squad cycle. Ronaldo, Saha, Howard & Heinze were good buy
22.5 million spend on 3 players might have buy a Ronaldo at that time. Or a Saha. Joaquin. Key players from other clubs or an expensive young prodigy. Liverpool tend to add solid, dependable depth.

Who knows what might happen had a certain Ronaldo was signed that year
2004/2005

Liverpool : 25.55 (5)
Man Utd : 20.0 (3)

Benitez & Istanbul miracle. Alonso & Garcia were great signing. Followed by Morientes loan.

United again, key signing. A prodigy. No explanation needed. Wayne Rooney. And Van der Sar too. Excellent transfer window.
2005/2006

Liverpool : 36.9 (3)
Man Utd : 17.5 (2)

We outspend them with our scattergun approach again. Reina & Agger. Great. Crouch & Sissoko great squad players.

But they added Park Ji Sung, Vidic, and Evra. Another excellent window.
2006/2007

Liverpool : 49.8 (3)
Man Utd : 90.25 (1)

Another Champions League Final. Milan avenges Istanbul. Torres joins Liverpool afterwards

Carrick, Hagreaves, Nani, and Anderson was great transfer for them actually.
Torres, Mascherano, Arbeloa, Lucas joins from this transfer. But still, bulk of the money was Torres. Then sporadic buy for depth. Money better spend for important key players.

United spend heavily due to 2 seasons of notable transfer outs. Refreshing their squad again.
2007/2008

Liverpool : 22.5 (4)
Man Utd : 0* (Teves Fee Undisclosed) (1)

Hicks and Gillett takeover at Liverpool.

Babel & Skrtel were necessary although still, not marquee signing. United again did great adding Teves. One. Single, important, marquee signing.
2008/2009

Liverpool : 40.3 (2)
Man Utd : 30.75 (1)

Outspend them again but who did we get? Depth, squad players. United did that too but identified Berbatov the Magician as their one marquee signing. And again they won.
2009/2010

Liverpool : 41.7 (7)
Man Utd : 29.0 (2)

To be fair Glen was good signing. Alquilani to but he just didnt make it. Maxi was great depth. We lost Alonso.

Ronaldo leaves United. Went to strengthen overall squad rather than big names. Valencia & Smalling was smart buy.
2010/2011

Liverpool : 97.1 (6)
Man Utd : 44.4 (1)

Starts of FSG time at Liverpool. Suarez, Henderson and maybe Meireles too, helped the team. Notable transfer out for us too.

As for United, Hernandez, Young & Jones did helped them early on. Squad is stable this time.
2011/2012

Liverpool : 33.35 (8)
Man Utd : 22.9 (2)

We outspend them again with another random, sporadic depth, squad filling buy. Regrettable and forgettable.

United smartly and importantly added De Gea.
2012/2013

Liverpool : 49.4 (7)
Man Utd : 53.4 (1)

Studge and Coutinho comes to help us. We spend big with others but had better transfer target identified, could've become even better.

Persie especially and Kagawa was great signing at that time.
I think we have a better transfer window at that time but it is undeniable that Persie helped them to the title.

That is what a single marquee signing can do for the whole team. Lift them to greater heights. And Studge and Couts did that for us too actually to be fair.
2013/2014

Liverpool : 48 (2)
Man Utd : 64.6 (7)

Migs join us. Needed at that time.

Moyes happened to United. Fellaini and Mata was added to the team. Feels more like depth, squad strengthening move. Transfer aside, shows how excellent and important Fergie was to United really.
2014/2015

Liverpool : 149.5 (6)
Man Utd : 170.5 (4)

Previous seasons results made both teams thinks the need to invest heavily. Title aim for us, improvement for United. Plus affected by City win n money.

Both invest heavily adding quantity and quality to the team.
2015/2016

Liverpool : 90.8 (8)
Man Utd : 144.2 (5)

2 windows brought Mane, Firmino, Lallana, Milner, Gomez, Lovren, Origi, Matip. So can't really complaint. But had the rest of the money used on one/two key, big, marquee signing?

Interestingly, similar approach by United too.
2016/2017

Liverpool : 63.2 (4)
Man Utd : 120.3 (6)

2 summers of heavy spending in quality means squad is stocked up. A window where both teams comes to their senses and realised what they needed. One player to lift the team

Salah for us and Pogba for them. Both helped the team
2017/2018

Liverpool : 118 (4)
Man Utd : 186 (2)

United outspend Liverpool but here, Liverpool were better transfer. Van Dijk as the key. Ox for the depth. And Robbo was the miracle moneyball transfer

Fred and Matic bought to unlock Pogba. Sanchez was the supposed key signing
2018/2019

Liverpool : 173.75 (2)
Man Utd : 66.5 (6)

Couts money means big transfer available. Alisson, and Fab, were important key signing. Keita was supposed to be too. Shaq was the depth

United more careful and thoughtful in their transfer given previous record.
2019/2020

Liverpool : 7.2 (1)
Man Utd : 127 (5 at present)

Stable squad means no heavy spending needed for Liverpool. But getting complacent is a sin in football.

United identify key areas and bought 2 key players they think the squad need. Really helped the team actually.
Hopefully history teach us some senses.

Transfer for the sake of transfer, because a player is available is a no. But standing still too will get you caught. Stale squad, less competition, less driven, hunger.

Refreshment is always needed. And you go for the important, big one
