The largest movement in American history has spoken and the message is loud and clear: transformational change to our systems of policing. This kind of change requires addressing the structural barriers to getting there.
One of those structural barriers is that we have an elected Sheriff versus an appointed one, and I’m proud to join my colleague @RDembowski’s ordinance that would shift our region back to an appointed sheriff that can be better responsive to policy instruction.
Another major obstacle, and one I explain in the video above, is that the King County Charter prevents the Council from decreasing the duties of the Sheriff’s office.
This is a major roadblock to achieving the vision of a more effective system of public safety.
This is a major roadblock to achieving the vision of a more effective system of public safety.
Millions of people around the nation have said we need to redirect most policing functions to unarmed, public health, and community-based alternatives. The King County Charter as currently written does not allow us to do this.
So I and @CMUpthegrove are putting forward Ordinance 2020-0253, which is a proposed charter amendment that would give the King County Council the power to decrease the duties of the King County Sheriff’s Office and redirect public safety functions to alternatives.
Support this Ordinance on Tuesday and then vote for it when it appears on your ballot in November!
Sorry everyone, the Ordinance is 2020-0231*, not Ordinance 2020-0253
