France banned theology from its universities but much of its philosophy (arguably the most secretly dominant, Biranian current) is religious and respects religion. AngloSaxondom allows theology (just about) but its philosophy is largely atheistic and mostly cannot grasp religion.
It gets ever worse. Just a few years back new historicism in Eng Lit meant religion was taken quite seriously. But now important critical books foregrounding religion tend to be ignored. The diversity agenda is becoming everything. Schools teach it. A box-ticking exercise.
Meanwhile theology and religious studies just about hang onto respectability by themselves clinging to the coattails of identity stuff, where they do not still cling to the alternative alibi of strictly historical scholarship.
Eng Lit becomes more and more about only the contemporary. Much history likewise. The past increasingly figures as merely a place to be rebuked for not being modern. There’s nothing radical here. To the contrary, it means we lose our comparative and critical faculties.
