If political parties REALLY want to demonstrate that Black Lives Matter online and address the online violence Black people, in particular Black women disproportionately experience... then listen up....
1. A zero tolerance policy on online conduct of all party members- candidates, MPs and members. This *has* to include a proper complaints procedure that investigates online harassment and violence with proper training on online violence.
2. Digital security, safety and self care training for all candidates and elected official with a clear policy on what to expect from the party when standing for them. This should include legal and mental health support.
3. Digital Citizenship training for members that manage Facebook groups in the name of the party or affiliate group. This must include banning bad behaviour, training on online code of conduct policy and active bystander training.
4. All political parties should have a policy on the Online Harms Bill that is intersectional. The bill will be the first piece of social media regulation and currently fails to acknowledge women and those multiple intersecting identities.
5. All political parities should be pushing for 10% of the Tech Tax on tech giants which has already generated £29m in one month to be ringfenced towards online safety and combatting online violence.
Yes all political parties should support efforts by civil society and campaigners to #StopHateForProfit but this shouldn't be used to abdicate political parties responsibility to make the internet a safe place for all - especially Black people #BlackLivesMatter
