Republicans and their propaganda apparatus spent decades creating an alternate reality, and teaching people to disbelieve any reporting that contradicts them, and here we are. https://twitter.com/AshleyMason739/status/1282078273082712064
They did it so they could be openly corrupt and self-dealing while insisting it’s those investigating and opposing them who are corrupt and self-dealing, and, well:
Never forget that Donald Trump isn't a disruption to modern Republican ideology, but rather its perfected representative.

Indifferent to life, disinterested in governance, committed to a propaganda of its own perfection, driven by every kind of bigotry, corrupt down to the bones
Trump isn't a exception to the Republican formula. He is the result.

How can a politics of theft and lies ever fail, in the end, to choose as leader a thief and a liar?

How can a politics committed to a myth of personal perfection ever fail to select a narcissist and a fraud?
How can a politics that believes lives have no value beyond the profit they can contribute ever fail to land upon mass murder?

Trump isn't a miscalculation to the Republican formula. He is the result; the only one such a politics could ever hope to land upon.
I say this b/c it's going to be important for us to remember this is an ideology that seeks no common cause w/us. It seeks only to steal and kill and destroy.

Important to remember this, b/c soon we must reject all the calls that will come, urging us to find common cause w/it.
Important to remember, because finding common cause is something people of good will value.

But: compromise and consensus don't create a healthy environment; they are the fruits of a healthy environment. When applied to a politics of destruction, they lead only to destruction.
It seems extraordinary to think it could be so but in truth the answer is a very clear yes. Yes, they can ignore it away and will.

This country has in the past used the myth of personal exceptionalism to ignore away far more deaths than 130,000. https://twitter.com/Jixstun/status/1282300714350448640?s=20
What's needed, I think, is a re-calibration of the national soul. We need to stop tolerating the lies and myths that have informed our politics; first by seeing them as lies, then by refusing to believe in them ourselves, and finally by refusing to compromise with them.
Foundational lies:

1) Life must be earned;
2) Being profitable/owning property is how;
3) Whiteness and maleness are assumed profit & ownership
4) Those who haven't earned life should be used; if useless they should die
5) Violence redeems
6) We are exceptionally & uniquely good
We have to confess the lie of these myths every chance we get, and refuse to compromise with them.

We must only use compromise for its appropriate intended use, which is to create a consensus between competing methods to achieve the same good goal, both offered in good faith.
We may in pragmatism have to accept imperfect ends in the short term, given the political reality of empowered individuals who believe in the lies

That isn't compromise. It's concession. It's not a good, simply a necessity.

Concession, not compromise.

Let's not confuse the two
To allow a concession is an act of resistance—accepting an imperfect position, not as an end in itself, but merely as more strategically advantageous than the earlier one, and to be pressed as soon as possible.

Reject anybody who would sell you that concession as a compromise.
No more compromise with lies and liars, with a politics of exclusion and theft and corruption, with people of bad intent. They've shown themselves very clearly.

They have no interest in compromise. And they make use of any concession they get.
Compromise is the fruit of healthy systems, not the cause. Compromise with the sickness brings only a compromised system.

It's a matter of survival.

A system built on lies isn't sustainable.

And unsustainable systems don't sustain.
