NBC runs story: "Detroit protesters demand justice after Hakim Littleton killed by police." The video clearly shows him firing a gun at police officers and then being shot. Why is the framing leaving this out? https://www.nbcnews.com/nightly-news/video/detroit-protesters-demand-justice-after-hakim-littleton-killed-by-police-87501381908
I think a few years ago there was a credible critique that media was too quick to take police's word for events and not investigate things, it's not any excuse for doing the exact opposite (always framing things against police) just for clicks/$$$
The news media can actually be balanced, it doesn't have to tilt wildly in one direction or another. It's possible to follow facts...
Folks on Reddit are saying local news in Detroit claimed the man was unarmed, leading to protests, which pushed the police to release the footage almost immediately. News media seems to be playing an incitement role https://www.reddit.com/r/Detroit/comments/hpajpr/tonight_i_watched_the_local_news_incite_a_protest/
Watch the local Detroit news report. They reported that witnesses claimed the man killed by police was unarmed and on his knees. The video clearly showed he was shooting at police before being fired upon. Is the news media trying to invite violence?
I'm sure they aren't, but their click bait approach to these topics when married to the moralism invading media where they feel justified in presenting only one side of a story is a combustible mix
In the Baltimore case I tweeted about earlier the man raised his gun and pointed it at police because he believed they would kill him. I wonder why he believed that? Media is presenting only one image, frequently false.
Let's be clear, it's tragic when anyone dies even when it is in self defense by the police. But media selectively and sometimes just falsely reporting police shooting incidents is tantamount to incitement against police which further breaks down community relations.
If someone holds the exaggerated belief that most police officers are going to kill them no matter what, why *wouldn't* they go down shooting? This is a very dangerous idea to be promoting.
