I'm half way through David Halberstam’s “The Best and the Brightest” about the JFK White House and what is basically the birth of neo-liberalism. Amazing how clearly Halberstam saw this new morally rudderless force emerging in American politics.
High test scores, nice suits and a disdain for “beliefs” etc.
They consistently shat on the FDR liberals of the day and liked hiring Republicans to prove they weren’t ideologues. Doesn’t that sound really familiar?
Question: Is Iron Man who was created around the same time in 1963, the first neo-liberal super hero? He’s highly educated, a wealthy tech CEO, is fighting communism in Vietnam and needs to create a lawless death suit to save his failing heart.
I could see Tony Stark hanging with Bill Clinton and Ghislaine Maxwell at Donald Trump’s boat launch or attending Mark Zuckerberg’s wedding.
And yet Stark is still better than Dr. Doom or some other extreme right wing super villain so ultimately we give him a pass and he’s a regular guest on Cuomo Prime Time.
