This isn't a fully-formed thought yet, but... I'm feeling troubled by conspicuous white giving. I am seeing a lot of well-off white friends becoming suddenly enthusiastic about donating to racial justice causes (which is great!); 1/4
however, it seems like
folks need to get clear on the differences between reparations and charity. If you are not ALSO redistributing power, your money becomes a way to reiterate your social position and reinscribe white supremacy. 2/4
I am thinking in particular about folks who make a big deal about how they are "lucky" to be "in a position" to give (read: without it significantly impacting their financial situation) -- as if it were a matter of luck, not of benefitting from oppression! 3/4
Like, maybe it SHOULD significantly impact your financial situation...? Reparations aren't about how much you can give and still live a comfortable life under a system that functions through oppression and dispossession; that's what charity is. 4/4
