EM clerkship week 1 
CHF, asthma, meniere’s, umbilical hernia, anxiety,
seizure,
fever, olecranon bursitis, cerebellar stroke, pneumothorax, and rashes galore.
Loved every minute as it flew by, learned a lot, and actually got to help!

Some lessons:
Explained anxiety to someone in custody with a phenomenal burden of life stressors. Corrected them that it is not “all in your head.” They were crying and hyperventilating and by just lending an unbiased ear, I got to see them smile and let us help
I learned that listening heals

Comforted a mother who awoke to her child seizing by her side. “You didn’t do anything wrong, you did everything right” As a new parent, I found I could relate in a brand new way.
I learned we often forget the impact of illness on caretakers

Talked to patient after patient about medication adherence. Explained medical jargon. Listened with an open mind. Tried to instill some agency. Advocated for my patients as much as I could.
I learned the many ways our system fails patients and earns their distrust

First time in a resuscitation... First time providing chest compressions...First time pushing medications...First time losing...
I learned that we won’t always have answers for the family, or even know the right words to say

I look forward to the lessons of the next three weeks. And I hope I can continue to keep learning as long as there are people who need helping 24/7/365
