I've been thinking a lot about this question of how we establish better virtual "hallways" as conferences and other events move online

(As this quote from Because Internet that @yoavgo cites suggests, it interested me before lockdown too, but it's taken on an increased urgency) https://twitter.com/yoavgo/status/1281939542413582337
Perhaps we can start a crowdsourcing thread of strategies that other people have found useful to replicate the "conference hallway" experience

Since interstitial conversations don't come for free anymore, we need to be intentional about how we build them in
Here's an earlier thread from me reflecting on the WisCon Discord and the breakout rooms at Linguists in the Pub as interstitial "hallway" spaces https://twitter.com/GretchenAMcC/status/1263588855178919937
A thread from @ojahnn about using short impromptu videochats as part of the conference hallway track experience https://twitter.com/ojahnn/status/1281988088630333443
Yes. I've been talking about this with @devonzuegel @starsandrobots and others, there are various newish apps springing up that let people move around in virtual space and have conversations drop off with distance, but it's still pretty experimental https://twitter.com/PenLlawen/status/1282020319952338944
Yes! It's not just conferences/events, it's also what people like about working in a physical place, the ability to have "water cooler" conversations in a hallway/over lunch https://twitter.com/anthrocharya/status/1282020148594053120
Awesome! It's from chapter 6, the conversations chapter, but interviews/reviews about the book tend to focus on the emoji, punctuation, and memes chapters

I think conversations are really important in the long run though

This is a good point at the industry level as well! https://twitter.com/maria_regina39/status/1282028003359428609
I have a fond memory from grad school of talking with a fellow grad student who was UTTERLY FREAKED OUT that this guy who'd introduced himself in the line for nametags as "hi, I'm Bill" and made pleasant small talk had actually turned out to be Bill Labov https://twitter.com/karmaglow/status/1282071306687541248
Yeah, it turns out that human ear/brain interfaces are actually generally pretty good at tuning into and out of several conversations happening in parallel (especially with location cues), and technology has NOT caught up to this yet https://twitter.com/hnmiecz/status/1282022206151618560
It's interesting to look at various apps emerging in this space

I wonder if incorporating some aspect of moving sound from one ear to the other as people move around would help with the sense of virtual presence/distance https://twitter.com/devonzuegel/status/1280376806437056512
