Human lives aside (hate writing that because saving lives should be enough), the economy will suffer equally if we don't shut down. People are afraid to shop, there is so much unemployment, tourism is at an all time low. There will be no International tourism to America. We used to have 76 million International travelers a year to the US. Look at these numbers of what we are losing by not controlling covid. 2/
Canadian tourists alone spend 22.6 billion a year in the US, or they DID.

I feel as if America has a bad illness that needs hard and scary medical therapy, like radiation or chemo, but with that therapy survival is almost certainly assured.
