It’s IMPOSSIBLE to find an article on Google about why someone moved away from Substack.

I moved away from Substack.

Here’s why...

Thanks for the inspiration @Mat_Sherman

First let me say, I like Substack.

I think it’s the best overall platform for building a paid newsletter.

I mean, it’s literally built for that.

That’s why I started there.
It makes your life easy, you sign up and you can start.

The problem I realized is where ever you start your paid newsletter business is where it will probably remain forever.

Once people pay you one play for a subscription it’s almost impossible to get them to switch.
I started doing a paid version of my newsletter.

I had 5-6 subscribers but it was at this moment that I had to really think threw the decision.

Do I want to build my business on substack.
It was a great way to get started.

I had 250+ readers but now I had to make the big decision.

Long story short, I decided to move away and the reasons are.... in no particular order
1. I hated having my website be .substack.com

This is small considering everyone who starts one has this but to me. If you’re trying to build a true business, it looks amateur.

For someone who wants to be a write, it’s ok but that was/ is not my goal.
2. I would never own the SEO.

This made the decision to move time sensitive.

Every time someone linked back to me meant substack received more domain reputation not http://rocketshipjobs.com .

This is fine in the short run but I don’t know substacks long term plan. It was a risk.
3. Substack doesnt integrate with any other tools

I planned to do a referal program like @TheHustle and @MorningBrew did.

They gained a ton of readers from it so I wanted to use that tactic as well. With Substack that was impossible or at least very manual (cc. @packyM)
4. There was limited customization.

I believe your landing page is very important.

I’m a student of @davegerhardt and @theSamParr so the fact that I couldn’t customize that page with Substack didn’t sit right with me.

I wanted to test what would work best.
5. Segmentation is limited

This ended up not being as big of a deal. I dont segment my list like I thought I would

That said, I do like the ability to one day email people that didnt open a few emails in a row or people that open every email but havent upgraded to premium
Those are the main reasons I moved.

I have to say, it hasn’t been the easiest journey but I am happy I did it. Memberful, Wordpress and concert have been good to me.

I look around at the publications I want to be like and they are built the same way (Cc. @2PMinc, @stratechery)
Again, I don’t think Substack is bad.

Actually, I think it’s great, it just depends what you’re trying to build.

Also, I watched too many people get screwed by Medium to decide to make that same mistake 😅
Ok, that’s it for now.
