Some reflections after running my first covid-safe outdoor meeting. Most scouts and their parents were keen for us to return… some who had been in total radio silence since March got the form back within 24 hours
Great to be outside doing classic Scouting activities with a new twist. Everyone had huge grins on their faces all evening. 3 bubbles of 8 Scouts and 2 leaders, each out of sight of the others, with a 15 minute gap between arrivals… anything less would not have worked
Scouts were surprised to be called out on social distancing rules but responded well to being asked to partner with the leaders to help us all learn how to make it work at Scouts
The distancing and hygiene controls were not perfect… but I am comfortable we took ‘all reasonable actions’… we learned from the first week and will get better moving forwards.
Converting traditional team activities into little solo projects (ballistas, firelighting, bean can burners) worked better than expected… an unexpected benefit is that Scouts who can hang back in a team environment all gave it a good go themselves
Planning is key… the meetings are complex and there is a lot of prep. You cannot wing it. Get the help you need.
Scouts and leaders had a deep sense of satisfaction at the end of the evening – the sort of feeling you get at the end of a great camp.
