I think this is true, which is why I will be voting for MacKay (caveat: I also like Erin O'Toole and Leslyn Lewis *very* much, though believe Leslyn needs more political experience.) If the goal is to win a national election, MacKay is the obvious choice. /thread

A personal anecdote: during my years in government, I sat through many (many, many) cabinet meetings. Peter MacKay was always a solid performer, holding the respect of his various departments, and with a good grasp of his files. PMO didn’t have much cause to interact with him.
But what I remember most clearly about MacKay is a conversation I had with him after one meeting, about some policy file or other. He was engaging, charming, kind, and struck me then as a profoundly decent guy. He has “it.”
…and by “it”, I mean the indefinable appeal that causes regular people to instinctively like and trust someone, and to be interested in them, and interested in supporting them. In Peter’s case, I think this appeal is partly a function of his good character.
His broad appeal will serve him well in a national election, and when he is communicating with the politically disengaged (that is to say, the vast majority of Canadian voters.) He will have an uphill battle, as all conservatives do, but I believe he can win. /End
