So, why the test shortage?!?
We can do over 5M PCR tests/wk. CDC lists the theoretical cap at 7M/wk but I think we are really at our cap. So, what’s going on? Here’s a start, but there’s much more.

We can do over 5M PCR tests/wk. CDC lists the theoretical cap at 7M/wk but I think we are really at our cap. So, what’s going on? Here’s a start, but there’s much more.
1. Mismatch of regional demand supply. No daily monitoring of local needs w/ lab by lab capacity.
2. 80% of major delays are from national labs
3. Local labs are primarily doing fine, but most volume isn’t going to them

4. Reagent shortages are still very real and may get worse. No major govt investment to support this. Govt must do for labs what’s it’s done with vaccines and therapies. Partner with industry!
5. Equipment is running 24/7. Its breaking down, and parts are getting hard to find. Almost all parts come from overseas. See #4.
6. Clinical use (symptomatic or known exposure) still requires more than 5M/wk. What happens will everyone starts getting the sniffles in the fall?

7. And, we started with a highly, decentralized fragmented industry and supply chain which is the elephant in the room. The govt has little to no appreciation of the issues and has not expressed much willingness to dive YET.
MUCH more to come.
MUCH more to come.
