I don't know who needs to hear this, but if you have an idea for a movie or a book or a play or anything like that, and you want to write it, but the thing that's stopping you is that it's a little bit similar to something else, and maybe that something else is a classic that 1/
you're wary of your thing being called a rip-off of, here's what you need to do: You need to watch #PalmSpringsMovie on HULU. It's so, so great, and I'm telling you, you will spend thirty seconds thinking about Groundhogs Day and then the rest of the hour and a half being 2/
DELIGHTED by this movie. What the makers of this thing were smart enough to do was to say, okay, we're not the first people to have this one idea. (Or even the 2nd -- remember Russian Doll?) Fine. But behind this one unoriginal idea, here's a million VERY original ideas that 3/
wouldn't be here if we hadn't allowed ourselves to take a hike down someone else's creative path for a bit. I guess the point I'm making is this: All Rock and Roll is just four chords. What you do with those chords is what makes the thing yours. I don't think artists should 4/
plagiarize each other, obviously. But man, don't ever let "it's too similar to x" stop you from making something great. Listen to Sondheim: "Stop worrying if your vision is new. Let others make that decision -- they usually do."

Anyway, Palm Springs is very good and very new.
