In ‘94, I swore to defend the US Constitution in all its parts, like these brothers. When I did, I meant it for all, even in my own blood, not just for some. So, for those of us who have taken that oath, this phrase undermines the seriousness by which we say “All Lives Matter.” https://twitter.com/1fubar/status/1281153322049630208
Like these brothers, I would refuse to say it, unless I’m given the time to specify every known ethnicity, as well. In one shift, a LEO will carry out that oath for any number of citizens of any number of ethnicities. They don’t choose the calls, the calls choose them.
For people who do not/have never lived by such an oath, it’s easy to dismiss the force as refusal to comply by prejudice. For most LEOs, the matter strikes at the heart of why they chose to serve their country in this way. They in fact feel disloyal to their oath.
By nature, LEOs are people of action. To be a person of mere words is cowardice. They show that ALM by doing their jobs w/loyalty, honor, integrity. And the vast majority expect the same from those to their right and left. Why? The oath. They believe and risk their lives for it.
I remember responding to a call of shots fired in a black community. A Sr Deputy arrived before me to find a black woman shot in the chest in her car. He stood there holding a compress/consoling her w/o gloves until Rescue arrived. Why? He believed her life mattered.
Have their been gross failures? Yes. Especially the farther back we look into our nation’s history. Are there bad actors today? Yes. Every human institution has them and they should be weeded out. Every LEO wants that. Why? The oath. It’s all about the oath. #AllLivesMatter #End
