I’ve seen a lot of SBCers retweet this and say things like “This sure gives us a lot to think about!” Which is nice. But inadequate. https://twitter.com/jawno/status/1281268843332153345
If the Conservative Resurgence taught the SBC anything, it’s that reforming institutions matters. The SBC needs practices and leaders that will reverse the unhealthy patterns John so graciously and pointedly exposes here
The SBC absolutely should not appoint a person as its President who uses his platform to advocate affiliation with the Republican Party, regardless of how solid his theology is. This is common sense & shouldn’t be controversial.
SBC heads need to firmly rebuke the self-appointed watchdog Tom Buck types in the denomination who constantly sow division and make people like John Onwuchekwa and Beth Moore feel unwelcome
Southern Baptists have to deal much deeper and honestly with its history, NO MORE whitewashed self-congratulatory celebrations pretending the SBC was founded because of a love for missions. It was founded out of a love for white supremacy.
If you think the SBC reckoned with this past cuz it apologized in 1995, it hasn’t! A SBC seminary President tweeted yesterday how proud he was that his seminary trained “God-called women” from its founding. Please be more honest: “God-called *white* women”
Such examples are legion. Whitewashing its racist history like this isn’t going to help the SBC overcome the ongoing consequences of racial division today
