From @DanFinn95: "In 2005, a bunch of us went to Liberty Hall to see Arthur Scargill speak on the 20th anniversary of the miners' strike.

Scargill had a load of polished anecdotes - it was stand-up comedy really - and one of them was about Jack Charlton.
Charlton was such a strong supporter of the miners, he'd even lent his car to the local union during the strike. He got it back for the day so he could drive to Nottingham for a meeting with Brian Clough.
At the time, the Nottinghamshire pits were the ones most likely to still be working, so the chief constable had imposed a blockade - which was later shown to be completely illegal - to prevent pickets from coming in.
There were police roadblocks inspecting every car, so when they saw Charlton's COAL NOT DOLE sticker, they told him he'd have to turn around.

Charlton got out of the car, stood up to his full height, towering over the young cop, and asked him 'do you know who I am, son?'
'Yes, Mr Charlton.'

'And do you know who Brian Clough is?'

'Yes, yes I do.'

'Now can you imagine what Brian Clough will do to you if I'm late for our meeting?' He was waved straight through with no further questions.

R.I.P Jack Charlton, 66 Legend, Irish hero, NUM solid.
