Since everyone is talking of #policeencounters, some numbers:
1) When Indira Gandhi was PM in 1980, she brought in VP Singh (then in Congress) as CM. He started the encounter culture in 1981.
Between Nov 18 & Dec 28 of 1981, UP Police killed 299 "dacoits" and captured 1,228!!

4) 1782 cases of "fake encounters" registered per NHRC (Firstpost report) b/w 2000 & 2017.
UP had 794 cases or 44.55% of entire India's "fake encounters"!
The next four were:
Andhra Pradesh 94 cases, 5.27%.
Bihar 74 cases, 4.5%,
Jharkhand 69 cases, 3.87%
Assam 69 cases, 3.87%.

We only hear some encounters more than others, purely due to political reasons. But they keep happening.
Like I said yesterday, the number one reason is backlogged judiciary.
