How to deal with cars in the Phoenix Park?
A thread

Chesterfield Avenue is the main route from Castleknock and Blanchardstown to Dublin City centre. 120,000 people live in Dublin West

When ALL of the gates were closed it created traffic chaos in these communities & others

Solution.
Keep the Parkgate Street/ Castleknock/ North Circular & Knockmaroon gates open.
Keep Chesterfield Avenue open to cars with short spurs off to N. Circular & Knockmaroon.
Close all other gates.
Close all other roads to traffic except for access.

2/7
Resurface all other roads to create wide shared spaces for walking/ cycling/ rollerblading etc.
Improve new cycle lanes along Chesterfield Ave.
Remove all roadside parking & other parking bays.
Designate car parks for specific locations eg.Zoo/ Visitor Centre/ Pope’s Cross.

3/7
Strictly enforce the parking regime to ensure compliance and generate revenue.

The vast majority of the park is now free for leisure. The amenities are still accessible to those who need to travel by car. Traffic & parking impact on neighbouring communities is minimised.

Now, what else can we do to make things even better & less car centric?

How’s about we run a Luas spur off the red line through the Park along the North road with stops for the Zoo, Navan Road (at the Hole in the Wall) & the Ashtown Gate.

The luas can exit the park at Ashtown Gate and continue along the N3 stopping at Navan Road Parkway, Auburn Avenue, Blanch Village & Blanch Centre.

This new more direct public transport option to the Park and Dublin West reduces traffic and demand for parking in the Park.

A similar result could be achieved with a bus service along a dedicated corridor on the North Road.

We need a solution that makes the Park more accessible while increasing amenity.

Shutting the park & shifting traffic and parking on neighbouring communities does neither.
