My family always praises Southall Black Sisters - they know women who have been helped and my cousin's uncle was the lawyer depicted in the film 'Provoked'. But I have attended events by them and a lot has me worried.
1. They have accepted British Colonialist views on gender and actively work with TERF organisations like Woman's Place. Through this, they spit on the long legacy of hijra communities that have been a key part of south Asian legacies.
2. They are not even politically black (whether or not that's a useful term) - I can seem to find a single Black employee or Black leadership within the organisation. It needs a name change and a critical review of its racial politics, including colorism & casteism.
I am tired of seeing marginalised community organisations further marginalise people within those communities who they don't like. You may be doing powerful work, but if you're chucking more marginalised people under the bus, your work is not liberation-based.
If the problem is that you have limited resources and can't meet the needs of those marginalised communities, then actively work towards creating other spaces to ensure that that support is given. Share what resources you can. Acknowledge your failings with apologies not attacks.
