I didn't put out anything out for Pride month because while I am happy for the efforts to build representation & issues being talked about, but many of these orgs with rainbow flags do nothing 🤷🏾‍♀️.
How many trans, queer persons esp those from marginalised caste class backgrounds were hired in all these so-called inclusive orgs? What policies were put in place?
Or will shows, content be generated for consumption of audiences/buyers but at the exploitation of or because of the unpaid labour, efforts of trans, intersex, non-binary persons?
That is my response to Noida metro, to that mint article, Bollywood, Kollywood & other language film industries. To all those research projects too.
Maybe this sounds repetitive because many of us have been saying this for a while, but who cares?
Everytime some journalist from various media houses approach me regarding a piece, I am tempted to ask, how many trans & queer persons, esp from marginalised social backgrounds, were hired in your org at any level? Is there a policy in place?
I am tired of this constantly being approached for opinions/quotes with nothing substantially changing. It was like a wave considering I was at that point very open on social media. Pride month tokenism can wait.
All OTT media platforms like Amazon, Netflix, Hotstar etc should answer. Also, if you put trans characters in front of the camera and call yourself 'a big path breaker', congrats did you employ a trans person who Co-wrote the story or character arc for you? Did you pay them?
Will tell you what will happen: the persons working on the production will hire one trans person, or not even that- hire a cis man or even a cis woman to play a trans person & then
.
.
.
The crew say the director etc will go on about how difficult it was to find a trans person. Or the cis actor will say how great one's acting skills are, how strong & courageous one is & then the actor will get awards, plaudits & credits for playing a trans person.
.
.
.
In all this transgender persons: "where are we employed?" "what are we benefitting here?" zero. People will say oh its a sensitive portrayal, but sensitivity will come at the expense & in the garb of making it all look like a man can act as a trans woman out of imagination
.
.
.
Furthering the stereotype that trans women are simply men in some dresses & again we are trivialized. The industry has near to zilch trans persons (barring very few) & all that movies do again is do this? Again, Whose career is being built here?
& pull up how many of these orgs actually contributed/amplified the fundraising campaigns for sex workers, trans persons, other vulnerable and marginalised persons/communities.
