/n Thread on raagas in tamizh cinema music. The plan is to pick one raaga every week and share my favorite songs based on the raaga. I use the word ‘based’ because composers for cinema have the liberty to deviate from a raaga’s structure.
/n Disclaimer: Information I share is a combination of the little I know and sources available across the internet. Thanks to all of them and salutations to the composers across eras for all the great music they have given us!
/n Would like to begin this thread (threads) with Kaapi, a commonly used raaga in movies and one of my top favorites. Moods typically associated with the raaga: Bhakti/Devotion, Despair, Sorrow, but there are songs in this thread beyond these moods too.
/n Starting with the world of carnatic music, Vidyasagar used this song and the raaga beautifully in Parthiban Kanavu with Aalankuyil Koovum Rayil ()
/n Who can forget these Ilayaraja classics - Thumpi Vaa (Malayalam), Sangathil Paadatha Kavithaigal (Tamizh), Gumm Summ Gumm (Hindi) - though I love all the three, the Malayalam version is somehow the pick among them.
/n Is there a better song on despair than this one? ARR striking all the right notes to convey this emotion. It will forever be beyond me, that this was his first movie! Kaadhal Rojave / Roja Jaane Mann
/n While there are traces of Charukesi in this, Chinna Thaai Aval is another song that evokes a sense of sorrow and longing.
/n This is turning out to be a slightly sad thread - I can’t help but add Kannadasan’s last song. Yeno dheivam sadhi seidhadhu, pedhai pola vidhi seidhadhu.
/n Enough of sadness – here are 2 people wondering why they had not met much before in life! A song that is largely in Kaapi.
/n Rewind to 1958 for a refreshing tune in Kaapi. காற்றினில் பிறந்தவளோ புதிதாய்
கற்பனை வடித்தவளோ! Of course, this means Jalsa Pannungada is loosely based on Kaapi too :) -
/11 Closing this thread with this under-rated gem from Veyil (I so wish GVP comes back to full-fledged composing)
