Jack Charlton was an anti-fascist, one of the founding supporters of the Anti-Nazi League in 1977.
A friend comments: 'Today would have been the Durham Miners Gala. Here is a photograph of Big Jack at the Gala. He will be remembered in the North East not just for his football but his unerring support of the mining communities in the strike. RIP Big Jack.'
Another comrade adds: As Newcastle manager, Jack lent his car to striking miners for flying picket duty in 1984-85. After being interviewed by police (''There was nowt they could dee like'') he proudly proclaimed: ''It was the least I could do for my people.'
