Why aren't the British people angry?
I must have been phenomenally naive in 2016 because I could not believe people would vote for the rightwing project of #Brexit, something no one could say they understood but that was obviously extremely damaging, in the nonbinding frauderendum. I was phenomenally disillusioned.
But that wasn’t the end of my naivety. I couldn’t believe three and a half years later that people would vote for the spoiled-brat, self-serving charlatan and liar, the poisonous Toad . @borisjohnson. Can you be phenomenally disillusioned twice? It felt like it.
But that wasn’t the end of my naivety. I could never have believed that the Johnson government, that any government of the UK, could be so incompetent, souncaring, corrupt and just plain evil as it has proved to be. There has to be another word for this. This was not disillusion.
This was the realisation of some awful truth, that something terribly wrong was going on that was beyond your powers to do anything about and you cannot protect the people you love and care about from the consequences. And this feeling probably goes by the name of anger.
A very special kind of anger. (Is that wrath? Maybe). But it wasn’t the end of my naivety because amidst all these horrors going on you can see a generally silent citizenry that almost seems hardly bothered about events when it’s not actually approving or, shall we say, clapping.
There is anger in society. But is there political opposition, an opposition that expresses that anger? I don’t see one. It seems we live in an elective dictatorship and one where the “elective” element is very ineffective, given FPTP and media bias, and opposition is emasculated.
You would think the problems are so obvious and the anger is so deeply felt (at least among those who oppose the government, which is what oppositions are supposed to do) that the main opposition party would at the very least have a clear plan. And would state it.
But there is no end to naivety. And no end to disillusion. And no end to anger. And all this time we as a species are destroying our planet. But why even mention that?
And here is a tree.
