25 years ago Serb forces overtook the “UN Safe Zone” of Srebrenica, proceeded to seperate the women and men, and en masse committed horrific rapes, beatings, and torture before eventually executing thousands. Today, we mourn 8,372 Bosnian Muslims whose lives were exterminated.
What happened in Srebrenica didn’t start suddenly on July 11th, 1995. It started far before that. It started with hatred. It started with ethnonationalist and Islamophobic propaganda. It started with a war of aggression against a defenceless population.
What happened in Srebrenica, didn’t just happen on one day in July. It happened before. It started in 1992. It happened everywhere in Bosnia. It started with hate and it cumulated into a genocide. It could have been prevented and it was not.
The world stood by, the world was silent, the world left the Bosnian Muslim population defenseless and ensured an arms embargo. The world watch the concentration camps, heard of rape camps, saw the bloody bodies, the thousands of bombs that fell on cities, towns, and villages.
They knew what they were doing. They killed children. They targeted children and babies. In Srebrenica, in Sarajevo, in Prijedor, in Visegrad, and in every village they stepped in. Today, I mourn every single one of them. I cannot forget and I will never forgive.
Today, I ask that you don’t stay silent as you did in the 90’s. Today, I ask that you join Bosnians all over the world as we mourn 8,372 lives exterminated in Srebrenica and tens of thousands more throughout Bosnia.

And when you mourn today, I ask that you remember the “why”. Why these 8,372 people were murdered, why tens of thousand of Bosnians were massacred and tortured.
Because they were Bosniaks.
Because they were Muslim.
Because they were “the other” in their own land.

Tonight at 7 pm, I will be leading United Kingdom’s National Commemoration of the Bosnian Genocide. I ask that you tune in to @SrebrenicaUK and watch, mourn with us, remember us, remember those we lost. Not just today but every day.
Let our tears be a warning.
