Story of Prahaar Battlefield Missile developed by DRDO. Proved in 2011. Army Orders ZERO even after 10 years
Prahaar missile length of 7.3 metres , diameter of 0.42 metres and weight 1280kg. Warhead of 200 kg. Range over 150 kilometres.

Story starts with Govt permission to start developing Ballistic Missile Defence System in 1990s.
Two interceptor SAM missiles were developed for BMD systems AAD & PAD/PDV
AAD was publically shown in 2007 as fully developed missile

AAD Became the basis of Prahaar. The missile was already fully developed & was simplified for its use as Prahaar.
Seeker was removed & warhead size was increased. Voila we have fully developed Prahhar, successfully tested in 2011

Battlefield missiles are produced, exported & used by many nations like
USA ATACMS
Russia Tochka
ISRAEL Lora etc
China SY400
China has its own WS32 & SY400 equivalents which is not only deployed on Border with PLA But also exported to numerous nations

So What does Our Indian Army do? looking at importance of inductiong equivalent indigenous systems?
It refuses & asks for Improvements. So Prahaar becomes Pragati with range increase to 170km+

But does Army order or Induct Pragati? Off course not! It asks for Moooore Improvements.
Prithvi missile production has ended more than a decade back & in any case that's a different category of missile. Its replacement is Pralaay missile which is also under endless testing
So China has formidable Rocket force against Army on borders but our Army inspite of Indigenous equivalents available, does not want to order it, delaying for last 20 years
The latest demand of Army is to increase range to 200km & missile is now called Pranaash. It will be tested in 2021
I have called up Xi Ping-pong to delay any war by 10 more years so that Army can test Indigenous products to heart content
It strongly seems Army is delaying all surface to surface missile production & induction
1. Guided Pinaka-2 range 90km
2 Prahhar Guided missile Range 150km
3. Pralaay Guided missile Range 400-800km
So we are left with only few Pinaka Unguided Rockets 40-60km range only

I am sure if it was a Zoo, Golf Course, Building at Nariman point or Imported gold plated useless crap,
There would be no delay
There would be no delay
Incidentally, Prahaar is the only indigenous Surface Launched Missile that can take "tight turn to hit reverse side of mountain slope", from long distance.
Hence, its utmost important & essential for mountain warfare

To rub salt into wounds. Actually India is more advanced than China in solid fueled missile motor technology since 1960s.
But today we are standing half naked on border because Brass did not order indigenous missiles or artillery in time & quantity.

Miltary has long history of moving the Goal posts to spite indigenous developments. Let me give you extract from CAG report for Air Defence Guns
Remember A famous German Co. Was trying to supply Air Defence Gun, in those days. (Subsequently black listed)

And we have this on going mess since 35 years. Now, China has formidable force of Drones where SAM missiles are too expensive to use. But we are playing Snakes & ladders with our AD program
Why was Army demanding increased Range from Prahaar, when that capability was to be fulfilled by bigger Pralay?
If it needed longer range why did it not specify in 2005?
If it needed longer range why did it not specify in 2005?
Same thing happened to Pinaka-1. Its initial range was 38km, longest range MBRL in India. Grad was 20km & Bofors was 30km
But Army ordered only 2 Regiments instead of 14
But Army ordered only 2 Regiments instead of 14
Now longer Ranged Pinaka-2 comes but again only 2 Regiments more ordered & balance orders withheld
Further longer Ranged Guided Pinaka- 2+ Range 90 km comes but its being tested to death
Look at Dhanush Artillery 155/45 towed. Tested successfully in 2013 but Tested by firing 5000+ shells. And bulk order of only 114 given
ATAGS 155/52 Titanium towed no orders
Truck Mounted Dhanush 155/52 , no orders
Kalyani Bharat Forge Light Artlliery 155/39 No orders inspite of tests since 2016
And now we have a potential war on our hands, and our Brass is like deer caught between head lights
So what do we do? Order more fighter Aircraft to be delivered after 5 years.
So what do we do? Order more fighter Aircraft to be delivered after 5 years.
Let's look at it from another Angle, what "if" we had
1000 Bharat Forge Steel light 155mm Howitzers
1000 Dhanush 155mm Howitzers
300 Pinaka launchers
100 Prahaar Launchers
100 Pralaay launchers
"Pre positioned" near the whole border.
What would have been our confidence?

Note cost of all these indigenous items is less then budget of costly:-
M777
Vajra
Chinooks
Apache
In any case, even if we still procure imported items, the procurement of above quantity (indigenous?) weapons is part of approved plans but the order never gets sanctioned.

Never Ascribe to malice what can be explained by Foolhardiness
Gen VK Singh himself repeatedly in interviews criticized the delay in procurement of indigenous weapons due to over ambitious GSQRs
He ridiculed GSQRs by saying that Army expect Tanks to fly as well as swim

With an adversary any Negotiations have to be from position of strength. Otherwise its begging
G219 Highway of China running parallel to whole Border/LAC at a distance of 100-200km & is lifeline of Chinese Ground forces.
It's outside range of Artillery & Airforce cannot give 24 hrs cover.
So important way to interdict it & Keep it interdicted is Prahaar missile

Indian Roads are much closer to border & can be interdicted by Artillery. Though they are fan shaped so damaged sections do not affect whole border.
WE Can bring whole Chinese ground warfare machinery & mechanised toys to grinding halt if we take out G219 at multiple points

G219 seems to be too far away for Special Forces/Commandos to reach & come back safety or to hit it at multiple points.
300-400km To-fro distance seems difficult. Hence Guided Battlefield missiles seem better & "quick" solution

China will also try to give same treatment to our Airfields, Roads, Chicken Neck same treatment. Hence we should be ready to return the favor

In 1962 we failed to take the Ground War to China or to Use Airforce, whats our plan this time?
How do we plan to hit Chinese Eastern bases if they try to Come through Burma?
How we intend to defend Chicken neck, in bad weather, if IAF is not available?

How do we intend to provide Artillery support to forward posts & positions that get cut off due to bad weather or enemy action?
Minor War even at Kargill taught us that IAF cannot be available 24 hours or do all the heavy lifting

This is all to emphasize importance of :-
Pinaka 2 Guided 75-90km
Pinaka 3+ Guided 90-120km (on drawing board)
Prahaar 170-200km
Pralaay 400-800km
Apart from indigenous Artillery solutions

I am Sincerely against any War but the only way to prevent a war is for your enemy to know that you will "win" not beg.
