Oh man. A towering figure in Irish football all throughout my young life. We’re gonna feel this one 😞 https://twitter.com/bbcsport/status/1281861662421798913
He brought total magic and confidence to a country that was traumatised by years, decades of dire economic hardship and emigration. His success with the Irish team, the boost it gave us, was incalculable
It might seem a florid exaggeration, but I honestly don’t think there would have been a Celtic Tiger in the early to mid-90s without Jack Charlton.
Not only that, but at the time, with the Troubles still raging, for an Englishman to become the most popular and respected person in Ireland was a testament to Charlton’s genius.
Like I was saying with the economy, I don’t think Ireland and England’s relationship would have improved over the past 30 years without him. He was a colossus, a prime example of how sport can change an entire society.
(Sorry, I’m really quite emotional about this. I guess you don’t really see how one person can really change a nation in totally unexpected ways until they’re gone)
