Erdogan is an asshole, at least in domestic matters.

He has imprisoned 30,000 activists and teachers who opposed him, obliterated the Kurds right to self-determination by bombing entire villages, killing hundreds of men and women to end their rightful struggle in the process.
He neutralised or incarcerated the political opposition and derided anyone who protested against him. Turkey still dominates the list of countries which jails its journalists.
What surprises me that supporters of another similar asshole, being so annoyed by this decision. I am now at ease with people being bigots (what can you do if not get used to it), but it's almost comic that people can't have some yardsticks even in their bigotry.
He went on to change the constitution, giving himself the powers of executive president (ala Putin), eventually transforming the thriving Turkish democracy into a joke.
So it's not surprising that he has reversed Kemal Ataturk's decision to keep Aya Sophia as a museum.
It doesn't even look designed to handle Friday prayers, especially with Turkey's grandest mosque Sultanahmet situated at a stone's throw distance. Like I said, it doesn't surprise me. Erodgan is an asshole.
When he tried to erase central Istanbul's last green space with plans to covert into a mosque and a military museum, the civil society rose up and occupied the Taksim Square, a movement whose ascendence and eventual cruel snuffing I was lucky to witness and report on.
