Now the 2 top uni press in this country interested in publishing my next book, hey. Where were you when unknown me and no friends in those places asked ...And didn't you tell me that... Nevermind. Bye!
While we are on subject, academic publication is a thorny place, for early career researcher, (with no 'connections' or w neglectful supervisors).
Publication w OUP & CUP is one of lifts to academic jobs and even more so to Russell grp unis.
Yes it's blind peer reviewed but
but I now know so many young academics who had help (advise on how to shape arguments in a way that ...) fr senior academics who had already published with those 2tops or ev help fr editors of those prestigious academic journals.
So when u don't have all that, things are harder.
So here I was with 9 publications for the ref in 2013, applying for jobs in UK to be closer to my man and our boy, feedback from selection committees: has published in obscure (French, EU & Canadian...) journals' no OUP CUP MUP journal articles.
Bath S. Uni: white woman Australian, who had worked across EU, and Uni VC sitting at my interview, thought those were good enough to be put through to the REF & to get me the job despite some of interview panel members reticence ...
Moral of the story: English speaking countries & UK Russell's GRP hiring committees in particular know little or don't want to know about quality of academic production outside that narrow circle of OUP, CUP, Harvard, Yale, Hopkins, and even etc.
My formative journey was done through, with and by History and memory scholars from mainly Western and Easter Europe & with African and Caribbean historians whose mother tongue is not English. I will continue to publish with those 'obscure' journals
and academic publishers deemed less ... In fact our edited volume is published by MacMillan and we have outstanding papers coming up!
Having said that I accepted 2b on committee for this Journal bec 1/ Ewout F. asked and I'm interested his work
2/ bec some of best CUP papers I have ever read were in there.
3/ bec I'm fighting on all fronts: getting outstanding thinkers in as well as creating our own spaces in between or completely outside.
Final words on this: OUP CUP MUP people inviting me2 join committee/board: non merci but would b delighted2 recommend outstanding scholars who been writing, researching history of slavery, colonialism, memory theories etc. Your journal could & reach new generation of thinkers.
