Thread... #Pune needs urgent attention! @OfficeofUT @narendramodi

While central and state governments focus on the national and state capitals (Delhi, Mumbai) ....cities like Pune lose out all the time! :(

Whether it is basic infrastructure, planning, or crisis management! https://twitter.com/SidShirole/status/1281653470555017218
Not a good time to discuss/debate right now...but this goes back to the old issue I keep highlighting all the time!

Our cities have very limited powers when it comes to governance! This NEEDS TO CHANGE. Pune city is bigger than New Zealand. Pune Metro Region is as big as Israel.
Why do we have constantly have to depend on the state and center for basic things?

Pune is the largest metro in the country, which is not a state capital. State capitals get some attention as the CMs and top bureaucrats are right there.

Pune has to depend on Mumbai and Delhi.
I hope that one top focus area for us in the post COVID world is major reforms in urban governance.

Smart Cities, Urban Renewal, etc... cannot happen without a fundamental restructuring of our urban governance.

Cities need more power and autonomy (and revenue share)!
Today, our cities are like 'colonies' of the state and the center.

Even for small things (a road, a flyover, transport issue, etc) they have to keep going back pleading to the state and center.

That's not how most cities work around the world. (They are a lot more autonomous)
