Been thinking a LOT about the writing commmunity here on Twitter recently ( #pipelinewriters). Specifically the idea of “making it.”

I moved to LA four months ago and, as you can imagine, most of my crew (including me) is doing exactly that: trying to “make it.”

But what is “making it,” really? Usually it’s something like getting staffed. Getting repped. Winning a contest. Selling a script.

Of course, all of those things are incredible & exciting & great.

Science says, though, that this specific type of happiness, is temporary. (2/7)
So, while you’re in the midst of making it, I’m learning that you must define making it on YOUR terms. For me, it’s the relief that writing brings me.

I worked through some HEAVY daddy issues shit in my most recent pilot. With a single scene. Two sisters. In the kitchen. (3/7)
That moment—that few hours of writing of that scene—was momentous for me.

It allowed me (forced me) to sit in the lonely room that is required for overcoming grief. And I did. I worked through my bullshit with my characters, Millie and Claire.

I know a little bit about success. I’ve gotten a massive bonus in my life. I’ve had some very accelerated career success. I’ve gotten every promotion I hoped for.

Not a single one of those things felt as good as getting that shit outta my head and onto the damn page.

So, writer, what’s your version of making it before you make it? Maybe you’re writing about race. Or abuse. Or friendship. Or trying to be who you actually are.

Maybe you’re doing it with comedy or romance or drama (like me!)

The point is, you’re DOING THE THING.

(6/7)
It’s the DOING OF THE THING that’s the making it. If you’re writing, if you’re pouring your soul out and growing from it.... well— you’ve made it, baby.

Keep going. Because what the fuck else is there to do?

We’re in this “making it” shit together. 💕💕
