A mask mandate in #yyc in all indoor spaces will protect all workers on the front lines of grocery stores, hardware stores, restaurants, personal care services, postal offices and other services, as well as their patrons.
"Neighbourhoods with a higher proportion of essential workers, in all of those sectors, showed a strong correlation to a higher rate of COVID-19 cases. Ppl working in those sectors are doing jobs that can't be done fr home, require sustained, close contact with others."

My pts in NE #yyc who've worked in essential jobs during lockdown were harassed for wearing cloth masks by employers, thinking it was going to scare customers. Masks were worn to protect customers! As things reopen, my pts are alarmed re no masks on patrons to protect them.
A mask mandate helps shift power dynamics that reinforce actions of systemic racism. Ppl are valued & supported when the City both properly accounts for risks they face, and puts in place measures to help overcome inappropriate exercises of power that feed off inequities. #yyc
Individual employees should not be alone in advocating for their safety; they deserve to be protected and have their colleagues and patrons masking too.
They shouldn't need their family doctor to write each of their employers letters regarding workplace safety during a pandemic.

A mask mandate will also quickly normalize mask-wearing so that those who fear being harassed or targeted, especially in the context of increased anti-Asian sentiments due to erroneous blame of Asians for the novel coronavirus, will feel safer to wear them in their communities.

A mask mandate must come w strong education & awareness component, particularly for law enforcement. BIPOC must not be put in a "darned if they do/don't position for wearing/not wearing" a mask!

We must learn the lessons that COVID-19 is teaching us about #systemicracism and #socialdeterminantsofhealth. We CANNOT continue to allow those at high risk from COVID-19’s impacts to also face high #COVID19 exposure. We can and must do better, now.
