@SentaiFilmworks has unfortunately chosen Jennifer Challenger as the official translator for My Teen Romantic Comedy SNAFU Climax. The name "Jennifer Challenger" is known among those in the anime translation community as the source of the worst official translations

of the simulcast era. The first episode of Oregairu S3 contains TL errors that nobody qualified to translate JP>E could ever make, regardless of lack of time, sleep, or context starting from the very first line. (Should be "Hikigaya. We still have your request to complete.")

From Hakumei to Mikochi, a show they did from 2018, here's one that stuck in my memory. Disregarding the mess of the first line, the second line is "すぐ慣れる", "You get used to it fast." They mistook 慣れる for 鳴る (to ring) and decided this nonsensical exchange was fine.

For a long time people in the position to call out Sentai for using a translator who can be charitably referred to as an intermediate student of Japanese have, for a variety of understandable reasons, refrained from doing so or from doing so with much vigor.

For some people openly complaining could harm their career, while others are reluctant to direct criticisms as harsh as Challenger's work warrants at any individual, both because it's not something that nice people enjoy, and because Twitter is full of people who enjoy it anyway.

I myself don't want to cause a doxxing. However, it's become obvious that @SentaiFilmworks is either somehow still ignorant of the incompetence of this translator, or for whatever reason does not consider it a problem it needs to address.

Both possibilities seem far fetched, but one of them must be reality. Therefore, I believe that it is time that those of us who are qualified to comment on translation, those of us who others trust to understand Japanese, begin speaking clearly and openly about this problem.

I'm not suggesting we gather a mob and storm the barricades. I'm saying that those qualified to translate, or at least qualified to comment on translation, should document and bring up evidence of this problem and ask Sentai Filmworks why it persists and if they intend to fix it.

The question that those who are interested parties but not qualified to judge the quality of translation, in other words all people who need English translations to watch anime should be asking is "Is this Unbased guy (and any who decide to add their voice to mine) wrong?"

"Are all or most all of these lines they call mistakes actually correct? If not, then what are you going to do about it? As I watch Oregairu S3 or the other shows that this person has translated on your service or the services you're partnered with,"

"can I trust the translation will be at least somewhat accurate? If not, do you plan to fix that?"

Naturally, I'll be the first one to follow my own request. In a new thread I'll collect those mistranslations from the first episode of Oregairu S3 that demonstrate absolute incompetence and ask Sentai why this is happening. I hope that others who care about translation join me.
