I tell a lot of different stories about how I became a PAO so early but the truth of it is 1) I was a junior artilleryman assigned to an HHB as an excess LT and ran errands for 5 months, 2) my commander was an asshole and 3) he told me to my face he had no intention of rating me.
Baby Kels didn’t know anything about IG but the “I’m not rating you and also you’re gonna be here for 3 more months” didn’t sit well with me. So I volunteered for a ton of jobs. Training room PL, AS4, Radar PL, Distro PL. Annoyed them enough that they let me be the DIVARTY PAO.
the takeaway here is 1) a horrible commander can absolutely derail your career if you let him and 2) no one will manage your career for you. Fight for yourself babies.
still love redlegs though, ride or die boom boom energy. phenomenal branch, phenomenal culture, important mission.
