They sent a LRRP team led by Sergeant Galen Kittelsen to rescue him.
Kittelsen, an Army Ranger involved in the Great Raid of Cabanatuan and later the Son Tay Raid was *the* expert on POW rescue raids.

The VC heard the Hueys and knew they were being hunted in their own territory.
They dog leashed Rowe to a guard and began hacking their way through the jungle...

Rowe and his guard were separated from the other VC. The guard had his AK-47 slung over his back as he hacked the jungle...
Rowe popped the 30 rd magazine out & beat the guard to death...
And ran toward the screaming of Huey turbines...
