Last night I participated in a @AassaOnline panel on #COVID19 on behalf of @royalsocietynz. It was quite sobering to hear about the challenges many of our neighbours are facing. 1/N
The representative from Indonesia explained how they can’t use lockdown to fight the virus because they doesn’t have the social or economic infrastructure to support people who can’t work 2/N
Japan, after its ‘cluster busting’ domestic response, is now struggling with its borders much as we are, with insufficient quarantine facilities to bring home all its citizens from overseas 3/N
The representative from Thailand discussed the ways in which they are trying to keep students engaged during prolonged school closures 4/N
I talked about how our decentralised health system had hindered our response and the need for an organisation that could better coordinate our scientific efforts 5/N
A number of countries are just hoping for the best with few good options available 6/N
We’ve all been dealt a very different hand of cards. We face some difficult choices in NZ, but the fact that we have these choices at all should make us very grateful /end
