Aided by a star-studded cast including the likes of Pharrell Williams, Tyler The Creator, Andre 3000, Earl Sweatshirt and John Mayer, Frank sets out to create a timeless, personal and honest body of work, something that would eventually set him apart from his peers.
Throughout the album, Frank tackles tough issues in society like unrequited love, codependency, classism, religion, sexuality, feminism, toxic male entitlement, single motherhood, drug abuse, and economic inequality that are a series of confessions about Frank’s new adult life.
FUN FACT: Frank named the album after the color he perceived during the summer he first fell in love.
Fertilizer emulates a viewer browsing different channels on TV and ending up on a channel playing music, which is a tribute to the album’s title.
Sonically, Frank uses unorthodox musical styles including jazz, funk, electro-funk, pop-soul, and psychedelic music paired with falsettos. Frank shares his creative process during the creation of the album with Zane Lowe.

Frank’s songwriting on this album has been praised and there are many lyrical gems
Less than a week before the album’s release, Frank pens an open letter vividly describing how he fell in love with a man at 19, and how he had come to the realization that he was interested in both men and women.
Frank performs “Bad Religion” on Late Night With Jimmy Fallon” just an hour after the album’s release. This performance also served as his late night debut.
Target refused to sell Channel Orange nationwide. It’s alleged that since they donate to non-equal rights organizations that they chose not to support the album’s rollout, which hindered its first week sales as Frank chose to release it exclusively through iTunes instead.
Channel Orange was released and peaked at #2 on the US Billboard charts and reached the top 10 in numerous countries worldwide, despite being an iTunes exclusive. The album has since sold over 1 million copies worldwide, amassing over 1 BILLION streams!
Upon release, Channel Orange was met with unanimous critical acclaim which would very quickly lead the album to become the most acclaimed and appreciated album of the year!
Frank holds a listening party for the album in Manhattan, shortly after the album’s release. Many major publications were present including press from Pitchfork, Fader, Complex, and Boombox, all of whom praised the album’s depth.
Frank begins his sold-out 14 date nationwide tour. The stage setup included a guitarist, bassist, drummer, 2 pianos and a DJ setup behind TV monitor props that showed different images and videos as the show progressed.
After wrapping up the tour, he began a European tour where he performed at festivals like Lollapalooza.

Frank gets bombarded with personal questions including one about his sexuality. After this interview, Frank would slow down his press run as he didn’t feel he should explain his sexuality when because he’s a musician.
December 2012: Frank receives 6 Grammy nominations including Album of the Year, Record of the Year, and Best New Artist.
February 2013: Frank wins 2 Grammys including Best Urban Contemporary Album and Best Rap/Sung Collaboration.

Fun Fact: He was the first artist to ever win the award for Best Urban Contemporary Album!
Chris Brown refuses to join the standing ovation for Frank, Adele scolds him.
Although he won twice that night, Frank performed “Forrest Gump” which generated nothing but negative reviews.
