In Sanya, there is a large Muslim population which is centered around the Huihui Village and Huixin Village of Fenghuang Town close to the Sanya Phoenix International Airport, with a population of about 8,300 people.
The number of Muslims in Hainan is more than 11,000. Hainan’s Muslims mainly reside in Sanya, Haikou, Tongshi, and Lingshui.
There are six big mosques in Sanya. The largest and best known is the Sanya South Mosque. Having been renovated several times over the last thousand years, it is a place where Muslims can meet for daily prayers. Its architecture is a mix of classic Arabic and traditional Chinese.
