“It is time” said the Ulstermen “that Cuchulainn settled down and found a wife”. “We all agree, Cuchulainn, that a wife might make you cop on and not be killing everyone” said everyone “I’ll try it” agreed Cuchulainn “Who am I marrying?” #CattleRaid
“Emer, the daughter of Fergal Manach from the Gardens of Lugh near the mystical river Boyne, has agreed to give you a try out”. “Fergal Manach, what’s he like?” asks Cuchulainn. “Manach means ‘Cunning’ so we presume he is a bit tricky, but don’t worry about that #CattleRaid
Emer and Cuchulainn engage in some fairly explicit talk (the kind that Sister Asumpta somehow omitted when she was telling us this story in the Convent school a few years back). “Bosom” and many of its less delicate synonyms feature prominently in the conversation #CattleRaid
“Come and meet my father” says Emer. “Howya Cuchulainn” “Howya mister Manach””No need for formalities, call me ‘Sly’. “I want to propose to your daughter”. “I have a proposal for you, son, that I think you will like”.”Is it dangerous?”. “Deadly””Great” #CattleRaid
“I think” said Fergal the Sly “that you would benefit from a trip to Alba to be trained by the great female warrior Scathach, the Shadowy One”. “Sounds sinister and dangerous, is there a chance I’ll be killed” asks Cuchulainn “almost certainly” replied Fergal #CattleRaid
Cuchulainn sets off for Alba. “Some people say that Alba is Scotland” muses Cuchulainn “while others say it is the otherworld. some think that it might be the Irish for ‘Alps’ which would mean returning to the Celtic European heartland, I’ll just keep going anyway” #CattleRaid
Cuchulainn wanders down to the Gardens of Lugh where Emer lives. “Howya” “Howya yourself” replies Emer “so you are the famous hound?” “Yes” said Cuchulainn “best warrior in Ireland, a champion in fact, fearless, brave...,””and modest” says Emer. #CattleRaid
