Tomorrow is the 25th anniversary of the largest massacre in Europe since WWII. In 1995, Bosnian Serb forces murdered more than 8,000 Bosnian Muslims in #Srebrenica. If not for #covid, heads of state & ministers wld be gathering to mark this grim milestone & remember the dead. 1/8
Despite passage of 25 years, victims’ remains are still being identified. Every July 11, families gather to lay their sons, husbands, & fathers to rest. Salko Ibisevic, the youngest to be buried this year, was 23 when murdered (His parents below). Hasan Pezic, the oldest, was 70.
I was a reporter in Sarajevo when Bosnian Serb forces perpetrated the genocide, and I've returned in previous yrs for #Srebrenica commemorations. In retracing the march of those who tried to escape, one could find clothing scraps, discarded shoes & even scattered bone fragments.
As @SrebrenicaMC found this year, genocide denial has “grown more insidious in recent years—locally, regionally, as well as internationally.”

Emir Suljagić, director of the Memorial Center and a #Srebrenica survivor, warns that denial “lays the groundwork for future genocides.”
#Putin’s #Russia has backed Serb hardliners who spread lies & deny the #Srebrenica facts in order to pull Serbia away from #Europe & to try to create a post-truth world where impunity reigns.
The facts of what happened in Srebrenica are painfully clear-cut: Bosnian Serb soldiers perpetrated genocide.

On this #Srebrenica25, we must honor those killed in July 1995 by rejecting genocide denial in all its forms.
