I thought it would be interesting to look at how London/the MPS compares to the rest of England and Wales combined.

I've looked at the #stopsearch rate per 1,000 for black and white people only (to simplify the analysis) for 2018/19. I've removed BTP & City of London due to the impossibility/difficulty to calc rates.

Overall, black people were 9.7x as likely to be #stopsearch-ed as white (42 forces).

Black pple were 2.9x as likely to be SS in the MPS than in the other 41 forces overall, & white people 3.8x.

Disproportionality was *lower* in the Met (4.5x) than in the other 41 (5.9x).

So the very high rates of #stopsearch by the MPS combine with the large black population in London so that when the MPS is added to the other 41 forces the effect is to raise disproportionality from 5.9x (for 41 forces) to 9.7x (for 42).

A different look at the stats: the MPS stops white people in London (at a rate of 11.4/1,000) at a higher rate than 15 other forces stop black people (Bedfordshire #stopsearch-es black people at the lowest rate, 7.2/1,000).

To add/note, from the tables in the previous tweet: Merseyside Police are closest to the Met in terms of #stopsearch rates - and higher than the Met for white people (96% of SS in Merseyside)
