REPRESENTATION & my frustrations about it. (A THREAD) So, yesterday I asked twitter to help me get to know writers AND IT PROVIDED! Thing is I can't possibly meet/read all of the awesomeness in this thread cause I have a full time job. This is what REPS are supposed to do!
The idea behind reps is great! Showrunner/creators have specific needs. Reps distill their rooster so they are (IDEALLY) able to help the showrunners with little time thread the specific needle of what they are seeking when staffing. Yet that is CLEARLY not getting done.
How can we change that? Is there a call to action we can take together? It is both awesome and disheartening to see such talent & stunning to see how few are repped.
Because this is a moment where people are asking to read BIPOC more than ever. But it needs to be as thoughtful as they treat other clients. If I'm writing a family comedy then I need specs/sample that show that specifically. I need reps to prepare their clients. To guide them.
Because if they send the wrong type of sample to me then it helps no one. And let's be honest, the vast majority of showrunners are still white men. So, if they are looking to do the right thing then we need to make it easier for them to find us. How? Thoughts?
I want to use my platform to lift up voices that have been silenced. So if there is a call to action...I'm willing to amplify it. But I'm just one person. So join me!
