Today’s AP article is further proof that people, incl journalists, don’t really understand the Catholic Church: what it is & isn’t, how it operates, what its mission is, etc. And so they paint it in terms they do understand: as a shadowy and evil corporation.
This is silly and wrong, and it can be profoundly frustrating, especially for those of us who work on behalf of the Church in some way. But there’s also a grace to be found here. And that is, we are reminded yet again of the work we have to do!
That people see “the Catholic Church” as a faceless, malicious, money-grubbing entity hurts. But it’s the picture we’ve allowed to be painted because we haven’t been faithful enough to our mission of evangelizing, or proposing anew grace of the Gospel life.
We’ve let “the Catholic Church” be seen and understand as something extrinsic to us – perhaps a part of our identity, but not the defining part. It’s little wonder then that they will fear and be outraged by something that’s so foreign to them, if we ourselves aren’t involved.
Let’s recommit ourselves today to proclaiming the Gospel proudly and living it out visibly. So that when others think of “the Catholic Church”, they’ll think of not a “what”, but a “who”: their neighbors, their coworkers, their friends and relatives.
They’ll think of you and me.
They’ll think of you and me.
