A trip to the North East today, and some lovely images from this 1980 welcome booklet for users of Tyne & Wear PTE's new Metro system. My parents took me on it in the spring of 1985 when it still felt fresh and new... 1/n
My sole photo of a Metro train taken on that cold and rainy day in 1985... 2/n
What I loved about the T&W system was the integration of buses and trains: Metro, the T&W PTE buses and the Northern and United NBC subsidiaries. All wore the yellow livery inspired by the old Newcastle Corporation... (yes, I was a teenage bus-spotter and 12 when I took these!)
Yet deregulation and privatisation brought it to an end. Just two years later, in 1987, and I took these on a return trip en route to Edinburgh and everything had changed. Is it possible to feel wistful nostalgia at the age of 15? Yes, it turns out... 4/n
I leave you with a Tyne & Wear PTE badge... 5/5
