This may surprise some people but I personally KNOW an illegal economic migrant that came to Europe during the massive wave of illegal immigrants risking their lives to come to Europe from Africa

I grew up with him. He lived in my house in Gh and worked for my family. I lived with him for 4 years, watched him have a traditional engagement ceremony, everything. He was literally family. To this day I consider him a very very dear big brother
He was always so enamoured with Europe, the US and just the West in general. His father had 15 other children and struggled to care for each of them, as I'm sure you can imagine.
He used to think Europeans picked up money off the floor and lived a life of luxury

And in many ways we do, at least in terms of opportunities and quality of life.
But make no mistake, this man was not a refugee. He, like many illegal economic migrants, had a family, home and a culture that kept him grounded in a solid identity with decent values

This man left his wife, family, risked his life and gave up everything because he thought Europe was the promised land.
My point here is this...MOST of the illegal migrants seeking to come to Europe are like this man.
They have a rosy picture of Europe/the West painted in their heads. I don't think it's racist or even remotely xenophobic to not want to take such people in

And for the life of me, I have no idea how a 'common market' turned into an institution mandating taxes on tampons, influencing local politics & obliging its members to ration out and distribute illegal migrants like a Christmas pie
