WHO IS SHE?

Naya Rivera is a 33 year old actress, most commonly known for playing Santana Lopez on Glee. She lives in California with her four-year-old son, Josey.

WHAT HAPPENED?

On Wednesday 8th July at approx. 1pm (PST), Naya rented a boat on Lake Piru for three hours in the afternoon. Her and her son Josey were seen arriving and getting on the boat on CCTV.

Naya is very familiar with Lake Piru - she views it as her "sanctuary."

When Naya failed to return with the boat by 4pm, the people who rented the boat went out to check on them. At 4:37pm, a call was made to 911 reporting a missing person, saying "we found a little girl* [...] the mom is nowhere to be found."

*the "little girl" was Josey

The boat was found drifting in the northern portion of the lake with Josey alone and asleep on board. When asked about what happened, Josey told officers that they had been swimming in the lake and that he had gotten back on the boat but Naya hadn't.

A team, including divers, were sent to search the lake at around 5pm. They looked for five hours on Wedesday evening, but the search was suspended at 10pm due to a lack of visibility in the water.

The search continued on Thursday morning. Divers struggled to see underwater as there is lots of debris at the bottom of the lake, giving less than one foot of visibility in daylight. Specialised dive teams from neighbouring counties have been sent to the lake to help the search.

On Thursday, the Ventura Co. Sherriff's Office confirmed that Naya is now presumed dead and that this mission is now no longer rescue-based, but instead recovery, which means they are now looking for a body.

Sgt. Kevin Donoghue said: "There's really no strong undercurrents like you would have in the ocean [...] sometimes the water can be very cold and the hypothermic elements of being in cold water could affect some people, but I don't know that that's the case here."

Law enforcement stated that it "typically takes 7 to 10 days for a body to rise to the surface."

When asked the same question, Donoghue said: "it depends. If the body is entangled in something beneath the water, it may never come back up."

Two German Shepherds who are trained to sniff out human cadavers were sent along with the search team, but they did not find anything. Sniffer dogs have the ability to smell up to 40 feet underwater.

As of Friday morning, a day and a half after she first went missing, search and rescue teams and divers are once again out on the water looking for her.

It has been reported that there is a small house off the side of the lake she may have attempted to reach.

The VCSO have been informed about the existence of this lake and have expressed intent to search it soon, although they have not yet done this.

CCTV footage also showed people riding jetskis on the lake at the same time as Naya was on the boat. VCSO will be contacting them too.
