I do not support a ban on medical transition of minors for the same reason that I do not support including gender identity in conversion therapy legislation. It is dangerous for the government to interfere with clinical judgment in areas where the science is highly unsettled. /2
I support a number of legal measures, including: 1. A end to the policy of schools accepting social transition (new names, pronouns etc.) without the approval of the parents or guardians and evidence that the change has been recommended by a mental health professional /3
2. Refusal by parents to approve social or medical transition of a minor (ie. up to age 18) should not be grounds, by itself, to take a child into care. 3. The mature minor rules should not be applied to consent to medical transition. /4
4. Where a child is in the care of a child protection agency, medical transition should be allowed only with approval of a judge. 5. Any child who receives puberty suppression or cross sex hormones must be enrolled in a research study. 6. The advice being given to parents by /5
Canadian gender clinics should be updated along the lines of the NHS website in the UK. 7. Canada should develop standards of care for gender dysphoria, to replace the WPATH guidelines, in accordance with the best practices for avoiding bias and conflict of interest.
