Alhamdulillah, Hagia Sofia will be restored to being a mosque which it was for 481 years after the prophecy of Rasool’Allah ﷺ was fulfilled in 1453 CE by Sultan Faith (rahimahullah).

However, some Muslims are mistaking the Islamic prohibition of destroying churches, synagogues

and monasteries during Jihad with taking property as spoils of war after conquest.

If a land was taken by force and wasn’t willingly surrendered before fighting ensues with terms of peace, there is a legal basis in the Hanafi school (which the Ottomans followed) to take

everything in that conquered land as ghanima (spoils of war), and doing with it as the Muslims see fit as per the Shariah (the decision and discretion lies with the Emir/Sultan/Caliph).

We can’t conclusively say Erdogan or the AKP are necessarily restoring the juristic adoption

of Sultan Fatih (rahimahullah), but it’s an important religious nuance to understand (ie. it’s not prohibited by consensus).

No point buzzing over Dirilis Ertugrul and Kuruls Osman to then moan and whinge about the noble accomplishments of the Ottomans. :)

May Allah (subhanahu wa ta’ala) revive the progeny of the Ottomans to establish an Islamic system which governs with justice in the Muslim lands, ameen.
